Cybersecurity is not just for computer science majors. The field rewards discipline, attention to detail, operational thinking under pressure, and the ability to work with classified systems — all core military competencies. Entry-level cybersecurity analysts with a Security+ certification are earning $55,000-$75,000 within 6 months of separation. Senior cleared professionals earn $130,000-$200,000+. The field has a critical shortage of qualified workers — estimates put the gap at 3.5 million unfilled positions globally. This guide has real links to real programs — free veteran training, certification paths with application links, and employer career pages.

Your Next Steps — Week-by-Week Action Plan

12-Week Cybersecurity Launch Plan
  1. This week: Register for free training at FedVTE and (ISC)² Certified in Cybersecurity (free). Apply to the SANS VetSuccess Academy.
  2. Week 2: Check if you qualify for VET TEC (does not use GI Bill). Start Fortinet free veteran training.
  3. Weeks 3-6: Begin CompTIA Security+ study (use Professor Messer free videos + practice exams). Set a test date 8-10 weeks out.
  4. Week 7: If still serving, apply to SkillBridge cyber programs and Hiring Our Heroes fellowships.
  5. Weeks 8-10: Pass Security+. Update resume and LinkedIn with new certification. Create profiles on Booz Allen, SAIC, and Leidos career portals.
  6. Weeks 11-12: Apply to SOC Analyst and Security Analyst roles. Target NSA, CISA, and CrowdStrike. If you have a clearance, you are already ahead of 90% of applicants.

Clearance holders: Your active security clearance is worth $15,000-$40,000+ in additional salary in cybersecurity. Apply to cleared roles before your clearance lapses — it is much harder (and more expensive for employers) to sponsor a new clearance than to transfer an existing one. Use the Clearance Job Match tool to find roles that match your clearance level.
