3 VA Disability Claim Filing Checklist
- Step 1: Gather service medical records. Request complete STRs from your MTF or NPRC. Include all sick call records, dental, optometry, hearing tests.
- Step 2: Identify all conditions. List every injury, illness, exposure, and chronic condition — even ones you think are minor. Tinnitus, knee pain, back pain, sleep issues, anxiety all count.
- Step 3: Get current medical evidence. Visit your doctor for each condition. Get diagnosis, treatment records, and nexus letter if possible (letter linking condition to service).
- Step 4: Buddy statements. Get written statements from fellow service members who witnessed your injuries, symptoms, or exposure events. Sworn statement format preferred.
- Step 5: File Intent to File. Submit VA Form 21-0966 at va.gov to lock in your effective date. You then have 1 year to submit the full claim.
- Step 6: Submit claim via va.gov or with VSO assistance. Use VA Form 21-526EZ. Include all evidence gathered in Steps 1-4. File BDD if 180-90 days from separation.
- Step 7: Attend C&P exam(s). DO NOT MISS. Be honest but thorough about worst-day symptoms. veterancareerpath.com/va-cp-exam-guide.html
- Step 8: Review decision. If denied or underrated, you have 1 year to file Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, or Board Appeal. veterancareerpath.com/va-claims-appeal-guide.html
BDD (Benefits Delivery at Discharge): File between 180 and 90 days before separation. This is the fastest path to a rating — many veterans receive a decision within 30 days of discharge. Do not wait until after separation to start this process.
