SGLI to VGLI Life Insurance Guide

The 240-day window to convert to VGLI without a medical exam is one of the most valuable insurance opportunities you will ever have. Miss it and you cannot go back.

Life insurance is the benefit veterans most often mishandle during transition. The 240-day window to convert SGLI (Servicemembers Group Life Insurance) to VGLI (Veterans Group Life Insurance) without a medical exam is one of the most valuable insurance opportunities you will ever have — and most veterans miss it or underestimate it.

SGLI: What You Had on Active Duty

SGLI provides up to $500,000 in coverage at a flat rate of $0.06 per $1,000 per month ($30/month for $500,000). This rate is available regardless of health status. SGLI coverage automatically ends 120 days after separation (with free coverage for the first 120 days). After 120 days, you must have VGLI or private coverage in place.

The 240-Day VGLI Window

Within 240 days of separation, you can convert your SGLI to VGLI without any medical underwriting. This means pre-existing conditions, combat injuries, PTSD, and chronic health issues cannot be used to deny coverage or increase rates. After 240 days, you must answer health questions and can be denied or rated up based on medical history.

If you have any health conditions developed during service — back injuries, PTSD, TBI, hearing loss, or any service-connected condition — the no-medical-exam window is extremely valuable. Private insurers will rate up or decline you based on these conditions. VGLI cannot. Apply within 240 days even if you plan to get private insurance eventually.

VGLI Cost vs Private Insurance

CoverageAge 25-29Age 30-34Age 35-39Age 40-44
VGLI $500,000/month$32.50$42.50$60.00$87.50
VGLI $250,000/month$16.25$21.25$30.00$43.75
Term Life $500K (healthy, private)$20-$30$25-$40$35-$60$60-$100+

For healthy veterans under 35, a private term life policy often costs less than VGLI. For veterans with health conditions, VGLI may be the only affordable option. Compare both before deciding — but always secure the VGLI within 240 days as your backstop.

The Smart Strategy

1
Apply for VGLI within 240 days (no exceptions)Lock in the no-medical-exam coverage as your foundation. You can reduce or cancel later. You cannot un-miss the 240-day window.
2
Shop private term life simultaneouslyGet quotes from Haven Life, Policygenius, or directly from Northwestern Mutual or USAA. If you're healthy under 35, a 20-year term policy may be cheaper than VGLI long-term.
3
Keep VGLI if you have any health conditionsVGLI cannot increase your rates or drop your coverage based on health changes after enrollment. This protection has significant long-term value.
4
Review annuallyVGLI rates increase with age. Reassess the cost-benefit annually as you age and as your health situation evolves.

Don't Miss the 240-Day Window

Add this to your VA benefits checklist — SGLI to VGLI conversion should be completed within the first 60 days of separation.
