Build Your Resume for SkillBridge InterviewsSkillBridge is one of the most underutilized programs in the military. It allows active duty service members to work for an approved civilian employer for up to 180 days before separation - while still receiving full military pay, benefits, and housing allowance. The employer pays nothing. You gain real civilian work experience and a potential job offer before you ever leave the military.
You get paid by the military while working for a civilian employer. The employer gets a free employee. You get real civilian experience and a head start. Almost nobody uses this - which means the employers who participate are actively looking for quality candidates.
The program is authorized under 10 USC 1143. Your commanding officer must approve your participation. The employer must be an approved SkillBridge partner - either through DoD's central approval or through the individual service branch's program. You remain on active duty status during the internship, which means your pay, TRICARE, and housing allowance continue uninterrupted.
Duration: Minimum 30 days, maximum 180 days. Most participants do 90-120 days. Starting 180 days before ETS is the most common timeline and gives the greatest flexibility.
Within 180 days of approved separation or retirement. Must have completed at least 180 days of active service.
Your commanding officer must approve your participation. Unit mission requirements take priority - apply early and frame it as unit benefit (you leave more smoothly).
Must work with a DoD-approved SkillBridge partner or employer who completes the approval process. Large employers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Lockheed are pre-approved.
You continue receiving all military pay and benefits. The civilian employer pays you nothing during the program - your value is the experience and potential hire.

Many employers list SkillBridge opportunities separately from standard jobs - look for "SkillBridge" or "DOD SkillBridge" in job titles.
Contact the employer's veteran recruiting team directly. Explain your background, your timeline, and that you are a SkillBridge candidate. Most large employers have a dedicated process. Get the job offer or verbal commitment before going to your chain of command for approval - it makes the conversation much easier.
Bring your CO a complete package: the employer's approval documentation, your proposed timeline, and a transition plan for your duties. Frame it as: this reduces transition friction for the unit because your replacement has more time to absorb your responsibilities before you leave.
Your unit's S1 or installation transition office will have the specific paperwork. Complete it early - administrative delays are the most common reason SkillBridge timelines slip.
Conversion Rate: Industry data suggests 60-70% of SkillBridge participants receive full-time job offers from their host employer. Even participants who don't receive offers report that the experience dramatically shortened their overall job search.
| Factor | SkillBridge | Standard Search |
